JJ, my dear brother wants me to write like le Carre! I told him that if I could write like that, I wouldn't, and also wouldn't ask for his opinion on my writing. Actually, when I have trouble getting to sleep, I read one of Smiley's adventures. The plodding prose is gamey after a while. I like the Smiley character though ... Burtonesque as in from the cold, dontcha think?

A good question. Le Carre is a great author of Cold War spy mysteries, but he has a very nasty anti-American and anti-capitalist streak. Which makes you wonder what side he was really on. Especially given how leaky the British spy services were, the number of moles, and the lack of prosecution of KGB moles in the UK. They really lost the will to resist, and the Oxbridge intelligentsia always had a soft spot for Uncle Joe Stalin. Some of LeCarre's characters are the well-intentioned intellectual communists of the British campuses, who sold out to one of the most evil systems of the 20th century; or at least the one that killed the most innocent people. The Nazis only had twelve years; the communists had seventy years in power to wreak havoc.

John Le Carre, pseudonym for David Cornwell is considered by many many people (myself included) to be one of the world's truly great living writers. The Daily Mirror is a British paper. We like articles from British papers. Some of us find articles from Australian papers interesting.

If you want to make something out of that bub, then take your best shot. I've just about had enough of this bullbleep, despite how much I'll miss a lot of the people here.

Several people have asked why I haven't posted here lately. Reply #1 is a case in point.

More important (to me), someone needs to work on the site's technical shortcomings. They are glaring and of long duration. MAB2 pretty well covered the human element in #24.

Anyway, I owe thanks to Lucianne for providing this forum. And many thanks to my fellow ldotters -- the real substance of this place -- whose company I've sorely missed.

A good writer is an expert on nothing except himself. And on that subject, if he is wise, he holds his tongue. Some of you may wonder why I am reluctant to submit to interviews on television and radio and in the press.

The answer is that nothing that I write is authentic. It is the stuff of dreams, not reality. Yet I am treated by the media as though I wrote espionage handbooks. I am regarded as a sage on every spy case from the double-agent Judas to your wretched Mr. Aldrich Ames.

And to a point I am flattered that my fabulations are taken so seriously. Yet I also despise myself in the fake role of guru, since it bears no relation to who I am or what I do. ME! Ironically I am British and don't have the vote here. But like the mad variety of this zoo.

Actually we are all still here it is just we don't talk so much these days!

Vacations are taken as a respite, to get away from it all. I have not been away on vacation, but have been away because I have been at a loss as to explain why particular things have been allowed to occur. Pinfold has been frustrated over some of the technical difficulties/limitations here, but it was I who was insulted at a posting of his being edited with no explanation, and NO response whatsoever to direct request of Staff on the board.

While true, there are rules regarding the privileges of using this site, as with any kind of contract, THE RULES MUST BE OBSERVED BY BOTH SIDES. A prime example that this is not the case, has not for some time is the very first post here -- why are we to limit posts that are news stories which come from legitimate news source, with the correct URL furnished? I take great objection to threads being closed for no reason other than it seems the Staff do not particularly care for the story, for no other reasonable objection is given. Threads are closed with the extremely curt, "Already Posted", but NO LINK IS PROVIDED to the original posting, to allow folks to keep to one thread. MAB makes comment at Post 24 that I find incredible, in light of the shocking posts that were allowed to remain on last week's Roundtable thread, comments that were met with rather weak admonishment, in my opinion.

I have been disappointed and disheartened, to the point of finding no desire to make comments to stories, make comments to friends. Conversation with Dawggie last night brought a note from Mrs. Goldberg herself, one that has given me hope and encouragement in feeling that perhaps these disappointments will no longer occur. I do so hope this will be the case, for like my friend Pinfold, I too miss the company of my fellow L.dotters, miss the silly fun and the serious discussion. I do not have enough friends that I can afford to lose those I have found here.

Thanks to all for the kind remarks. The events that transpired on the July 4 weekend were perhaps the culmination of a geometric progression of little annoyances that just grew to immense proportions. I have stayed away in support of Pinfold. I miss many of my virtual friends very much and appreciate that Lucianne is concerned and involved. She's the wonderful spirit that infuses this site and I miss her, too.

First off before anyone start blathering about their right to free speech, let’s get a couple of things straight.

Your right to free speech does not impose a concomitant duty upon others to provide you a platform upon which to utter that speech.

As a Supreme Court justice one observed, your right to shout “Fire!” does not extend to a crowded theater.

Lucianne.com is wholly owned and operated by Lucianne Goldberg and she is free to dictate the content and tenor of the discussion on her forum.

If anyone don’t like this let me hasten to point out that they are perfectly free to start their own Internet forum which they would be free to administer in any way they see fit.

Allow me to also point out that one can do this at little or no cost at Yahoo.

Lucianne.com was created to provide a forum where like-minded conservatives can go to read news of interest to conservatives and to engage in civil discussion.

It is not a chat room for oafs to engage in flaming and the posting of offensive articles purposely calculated to infuriate other members.

One person posting under the name “Hypocrite Mufti” and purporting to be some sort of Muslim fighter recently posted an essay from a HAMAS propaganda site.

I have read enough of this cretin’s posts to conclude that he or she is a native English speaker who uses the language in the British idiom.

This was beyond the pale.

There has been an upswing in posts on this forum which have clearly been purposely calculated to be offensive to the Jewish posters on this board.

Very recently one poster changed his screen name to one that was extremely offensive in a pornographic sense and then proceeded to post in the pretext of being a Jewish woman.

He insisted that this was not anti-Jewish but I fail to see how any Jew could fail to be highly insulted by such insensitivity.

It was much akin to posting in stereotypical black Bones-and-Tambo dialect under a comic stepnfetchit screen name and then claiming it was not meant to bwe racist.

While we’re speaking of disrupting the forum for personal amusement, some of the worst offenders recently have been a poster or posters who purport to be Australian.

There may be one, two or more of them; it is difficult to tell because they constantly change their names.

These “Australians” — along with most foreigners for that matter — have at best a rudimentary grasp of American conservative political and social issues.

They have bragged that they are here to “take the piss” out of the Yanks — or some such Australian jargon which I take to mean they are intent on engaging in flaming other posters merely for the enjoyment of being confrontational.

The other night two of them were gloating about how easily they chased an American poster — a woman in this case — off a thread which they were on.

At any rate, they really contribute very little to L.com and are responsible for much incivility and anger.

Many of their posts are virulent denunciations of various facets of American institutions, be they the Constitution, political leaders or even our handling of WW II.

In other words, they engage in blatant anti-Americanism simply to see how far they can push before others on the thread lose their tempers.

All in all they seem to be here to disrupt the forum for their own entertainment and for no other reason.

Bad posters drive out good and left unchecked flame wars and gross incivility will in time destroy a forum and leave something resembling loony bin in it’s wake.

I saw this happen on another forum which at it’s best was much like what Lucianne.com is now but which never regained it’s former excellence after the turmoil subsided.

The prospect of having L.com turned into some darwinian Animal House where only the strong survive is one which is completely unacceptable to me.

Being civil is something both sides should try to be....sometimes people get excited and dont behave the way they should....but this thing about not being civil, and baiting people has been happening on both sides here, and maybe everyone should start thinking about how they are acting....when someone gets really offensive, I just skim over their remarks....and again, I have seen offensive stuff from both sides...and no, I dont have any proof, or any cut and paste items to show as proof...just my memory....

Are you kidding? The *threads* (*room* is an interesting choice of words - do you have this confused with a chatroom perhaps?) don't "belong" to anyone. Everyone is free to post on any thread they want last I checked. You can't tell people where to post. That's damn funny!

Some of you seem to have this website mixed up with a junior high school. Some sort of "club" and gee who is friends with who and la-di-da. It's a news forum. Fun yes! Junior high school no.

Posters who have made ugly racial slurs against blacks have been thrown off here and rightfully so. The same applies to other groups I should think. I would agree that posters should wise up to the rules and act according to what they believe to be right for them.

November seems to be coming very quickly to me. Just a few months. Time has flown so quickly since we were all saying "It's a year away!" But GW is still ahead. That's the good news. This election is so important. That's the beauty of this website. To have a place to learn about the candidates and spread the word, and share ideas. Well, I will attempt to clarify one more time ... complaint is not founded on that which is posted by folks -- I am talking about the behavior of the Staff. Selective editing, closing threads for no stated reason, or for a curt *Already Posted* with no link provided to the previous thread. Postings which obviously violate the stated rules one agrees to upon registration are not dealt with in a timely manner. Violaters we know to have been banned return, with two or three, sometimes more, different incarnations, SO STATED by them on threads, and yet, they continue their disruptive, often outrageous behavior, leaving it to look, as Pinfold eloquently pointed out some time ago, as though *no one is home* to these burglars.

I am not whining, making petty complaint, am not looking at this place as a club, chat room, nothing of the kind, nor do I need any of you to hold my hand. I was merely responding to several posters noticing an absence, providing the courtesy of explanation.

Instead of my so obviously annoying so many with this, I suggest anyone who wants to know what has aggrieved me may write me and ask directly. I do answer my email.

Speaking of closing threads...last night I posted an article about cow flatulance causing excessive methane production in Australia. The thread was closed for no obvious reason and there was no explanation why. The only reason I can think of was that someone told a crude fart joke.

All right, I have read all the post and as Mr Hatch would say ..'there is justice on both sides'. There should be room for both serious and the not so serious. It will come as no suprise , most every thing we say is a repeat of a repeat,of a ...., all the arguements have been stated a thousand times..more becomes less as the shadows move across the face of time...Lets fry ALL the fish,but do it without hate or anger with each other. Okay guy, I really have to stick up for my staff here. We do the best we can. I know we are not perfect but this site is huge and alive 24/7 and at the risk of whining - it is a great deal of work. If a thread gets closed because its got a fart joke, the N word or anything we think is offensive live with it. If duplicate posts don't get caught in time - scroll on by. It's not the end of the world.

I hearby offer to refund every penny anyone has spent to make this the interesting place it is.

I also offer to E mail anyone the other conservative sites available. Go see how much fun they are. Ours is what it is. Hopefully it will get better. Until then cut us some slack. We hit 4 million page views a month this month which makes us the most successful site of its kind of the web.

I agreed with you on almost everything you posted (there must have been something in there that I saw the other side of things). I'm really concerned that the quality of Licianne's website does not go downhill.

This IS a political website with rules. Lots of these rules have been broken. Some people get away with it, some don't. There is a lack of consistancy in the application of the rules. There ARE people who come here both to have fun AND to make trouble. Earlier this month there were terrible things happening without being stopped by staff. Drove one of my friends nuts. Now he's gone. Yes, he did bad.

The point is that some people are hear for the purpose of driving us batty, take over a thread, etc. Many times these very same people have some really good comments to make.

I usually leave the thread when this sort of thing happens. Life is too short and time is precious.
I have never yet complained to staff. But maybe that is the easy way out.

I love this place, and I don't want to see anything bad happen to it. Maybe we quiet conservatives should stand our ground. I've noticed that many people who I agree with most of the time don't post their email addresses, either. Would it help if we did?
